I’m pretty sure gum balls are the universal symbol of childhood. I remember asking for a quarter on every grocery trip so I could hit up the gum ball machine at the end! Do you remember how lucky you felt when you scored a blue or a red? Or how you would giggle at your brother when he got a green or a yellow? Yuck! Did anyone ever really like those flavors?!? Why did they even put them in there? How is it that a quarter could so easily make you feel like you hit the jackpot all these years ago??? Well, I probably hadn’t chewed one or hit up a gum ball machine for at least 20 years now, but I couldn’t resist chomping on these cute (and tasty!) pearlized gum balls as I was crafting up this next treat! Instant nostalgia that lasts until the flavor runs out. But the true prize will be when my niece is looking back and feeling nostalgic thinking about these darling little treats in about 20 years or so! I’m sure she’ll remember every detail of Ellie’s Amazing Ice Cream Party with a happy heart!
Here’s all you’ll need: Gum balls, tan or gold cupcake liners, 4 X 9.5 in cellophane bags (you can find these at Michaels or at your local craft store), ribbon, and clear tape.
Flatten out a cupcake liner and then fold it in half.
Now fold it in half again. It should look like this!
Twist it into a cone shape and tape the edges together to hold in place. If only ice cream cones were shiny and gold in real life too!
Lay your cellophane bag flat on the table. We used a 4 X 9.5 bag but you can also substitute with a similar size. It doesn’t matter how long the bag is, but you want the width around 3-4″.
Fold the bag in half and tape the edges to secure. You’ll end up with 4 layers of cellophane.
Stuff the cone in between the first and second layer of cellophane. Push it all the way down to the bottom using your finger or a long, skinny object, the tip of a pen.
Staying within the same layer, add the gum balls one at a time to top the ice cream cone.
Tie with a pretty ribbon to secure and keep everything in place. Cut off any excess cellophane bag at the top if needed. I can’t get over how sweet they are! And you can make them ahead of time or even have the kids help!
