Raise your hand if you wish Pizza Night was EVERY night! Just me?!? Well I can tell you for a fact that if my niece and nephew are reading this post right now, they’ve got both hands up! This homemade pizza dough is my go to dinner for slumber parties with them. Nathan and Ellie LOVE to help Aunt Lisa bake…..the messier it is the better!! Lucky for Aunt Lisa, we can whip this one up in no time in the bread maker. Don’t have a bread maker? I’ll show you how to make it by hand too! I’ve tried lots of recipes and this pizza dough is our absolute favorite. Hands down! It’s really versatile and freezes well too. It can be used for two thin crust pizzas or one thick crust and both versions cook up perfectly!! So pick your toppings (Nathan and Ellie’s specialty is half cheese/half pepperoni) and let’s have an impromptu Pizza Night tonight!
Here’s all you’ll need: water, olive oil, honey, kosher salt, flour, and yeast. Oh yeah, did I mention it’s basically a five ingredient recipe too?
Place water, olive oil, honey, kosher salt, flour, and yeast in a bread maker in the order listed. To make dough by hand, add water to a bowl, top with yeast, and let sit for five minutes. Add the olive oil, honey, kosher salt, and flour to the bowl. Knead by hand for about 5 minutes. The dough will begin to form a ball and become smooth and elastic. Transfer dough to a bowl coated with cooking spray. Cover with plastic and let rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until dough has doubled in size.
Insert bread pan into bread maker and close the lid. Select dough cycle and press start. My total machine time is an hour and 30 minutes. I absolutely am head over heels in love with this thing. Set it and forget it! Come back and there’s pizza dough!! Lazy girl baking at it’s finest. Yasssssssss!!!!!!
Remove the dough from the machine. Separate into 2 balls if you plan on making thin crust or leave it as one ball if you are using for a thick crust pizza. If planning to freeze, spray the inside of a zip loc bag with nonstick cooking spray, place the dough inside (squeeze out any additional air), and place in the freezer for up to 2 months. When ready to use, remove from the freezer and thaw either in the refrigerator or on the countertop. It really doesn’t take very long to thaw. In my house we also LOVE to make pizza on the grill. A frozen pizza dough travels great in a camping cooler! Just sayin!
Roll dough into the shape of your pizza on a lightly floured surface. Are you team circle or team square?
Spray a pizza pan (or a cookie sheet if you don’t have one) with cooking spray. Place dough onto pizza pan and use your fingers to form a crust. The crust shown below is one of our thin crusts (only half the dough recipe). Prick the pizza dough all over using a fork.
Add the toppings of your choice, this one is your basic red sauce, pizza cheese, and pepperoni, fancied up with some oregano and pizza spices.
Bake in a 450 degree oven for 12-15 minutes or until toppings and crust are slightly browned. 15 minutes seems to be the magic number in my oven! Allow pizza to cool slightly before slicing. Easy peasy! And it’s way cheaper and way more fun than ordering out! Well, my mouth is watering….
